The Centre for Business Excellence CoWork space was founded in 2015 by Elaine McPherson, an entrepreneur and certified professional bookkeeper.
It’s always been her vision to create a space where small independent businesses could work & co-exist together, sharing resources and minimizing costs. In 2006, initial market research indicated that there was not a market for such a business in Canmore. The research did, however, indicate that there was space and a need for her services as a Certified Professional Bookkeeper.
As the business grew, Elaine realized the need to move her home-based business to a small office space. Working in a professional workspace was a natural progression. Taking a calculated risk, even with the increased overhead, was the only way to go.
Now in its 9th year of success, her company, e=mc2 The Centre for Business Excellence offers its services and solutions to small and medium sized businesses throughout Western Canada.
Early in 2014, as her team strategized for its future growth, they decided to re-evaluate and subsequently implement the shared office space concept, which is often referred to today as ‘CoWork’, ‘business incubator’, or ‘accelerator’ space.
Before taking the leap into entrepreneurship, Elaine was employed as the Controller and Division Manager of Support Services for the Fort Calgary Preservation Society (For Calgary Historic Park). She also spent time in controllership and assistant controllership roles with Radisson and Hyatt Hotels, as well as in the commercial mortgage and construction lending field.
Elaine’s strong business acumen is complemented by her belief that not-for-profit organizations are the heart and soul of any community. She is currently involved with funding loans for small entrepreneurs all over the world through Kiva, and enjoys encouraging the entrepreneurs of tomorrow through her work with Junior Achievement.
A strong believer in giving back, Elaine has extensive experience working on Boards of Directors, with a special interest in rebuilding and revitalizing organizations. She was the President of the Hospitality, Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP), Southern Alberta Chapter, for two terms (2002-2004). Elaine also spent several years volunteering at a global level with the HFTP Education Advisory Council, as well as their Leadership Council.
‘Innovation and the fast-paced momentum of the business-world, has always been a fascination of mine. My sweet spot, my purpose, in this idyllic life is to provide support to the movers and shakers of the business world.
At e=mc2 The Centre for Business Excellence, we want to facilitate the formation of an Entrepreneurs’ dreams into reality’
