19 Jan Entrepreneurs Connect – Perfect Pitch Presentations
February 2nd, 2016
After months of fruitlessly trying to round up investors for a safety brake that would, for the first time in history, make human travel in elevators safe, Elisha Otis packed away his charts, diagrams, and designs and called P.T. Barnum. It was 1850 and P.T. Barnum was hosting the World’s Fair. Barnum and Otis orchestrated a live demonstration that sent Otis three stories up an elevator shaft. At the top Otis pulled out a sabre, cut the ropes and, as the audience gasped in amazement, stopped in mid air as his brake engaged and prevented the elevator car from crashing to the floor below. In 90 seconds Otis had his investors and history was made. The elevator pitch was born.
